The seeds of Poppy Press...
Poppy Press Publishing Ltd.
is a creative venture in Victoria, British Columbia, launched by a poet and an artist;
Rhonda Batchelor and Alexander Lavdovsky, two individuals with a shared passion for
the art of the book. Their extensive experience working with text, print and paper,
with creativity and techniques has led to a common goal: to produce the finest, most
beautiful books they can. By marrying the highest standards of content, design and
production to the textual elegance of fine art and visual elements, they know these
books will delight you.
From 1990 to 2000 Rhonda Batchelor
operated Reference West, publishing well over one hundred chapbook titles of Canadian
poetry and short fiction known as The Hawthorne Series. A published poet and professional
editor, Rhonda has worked with emerging writers as well as authors with national
and international reputations. Three poets from the Hawthorne Series have won the
prestigious bp Nichol Chapbook Award: Susan Musgrave, for In the Small Hours of
the Rain; Theresa Kishkan, for Morning Glory and P.K. Page, for Alphabetical.
Alexander Lavdovsky was born
in Czechoslovakia where he learned the art of letterpress and engraving in Prague.
Following further studies Alex pursued a career in printmaking and painting. He lived
in Finland and Sweden before coming to Canada. His art is held in private collections
around the world. Apart from his art he operates (since 1978) Classic Engraving Limited,
producing fine stationery and greeting cards. Influenced by this commercial involvement,
he continues to explore unique multi-level engraving and embossing techniques.
Alex is a member of Victoria's prestigious association of artists The Limners.
